Based on drawings by Payer Gabriel, the artist’s book stilleven [stɪlevə(n)]: Eine Inventur / An Inventory is an inventory-like exploration of still life. Between enumeration and cosmogram, the book unfolds two intertwining strands of text and image. Through the interplay of drawing, scientific tableaux, decoration, colonial botany, and the genealogical interconnections of European still lifes, the book develops a critical reading of still life.
The hand-marbled book covers, created by the artist duo Payer Gabriel, make each of the 350 copies unique and carry the idea of inventory through to the external design.
